COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina’s unemployment rate has fallen to a 15-year low.

The Department of Employment and Workforce said Friday that the state’s jobless rate was 5.4 percent in June. That’s down from 5.6 percent in May and is the lowest level since July 2001.

In the past year, the state’s labor force has grown by more than 60,000 people. Nationally, unemployment increased by 0.2 to 4.9 percent in June.

Executive Director Cheryl Stanton heralded that drop, saying it’s a sign businesses trust the state and are expanding in South Carolina.

Professional and business services saw the biggest gains, with 3,200 jobs. The government jobs sector also grew by 2,600 positions.
