JONESPORT, Maine (AP) - The federal Department of Transportation will give more than $10 million to help replace the Beals Island Bridge in Jonesport.

Sen. Susan Collins, a Maine Republican, announced the funding on Tuesday after she was notified of it by DOT. Collins had advocated for funding to help replace the structurally deficient bridge.

Collins says the work will also help create construction jobs in rural Maine.

The Beals Island Bridge is the only way to get from the mainland in Jonesport to the island town of Beals. The island is located in Maine’s Downeast region.
