TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) - The Latest on the fatal shooting of a 16-year-old girl (all times local):

10:20 a.m.

Tempe police say a 16-year-old girl killed in an accidental shooting was from Nogales, Sonora, Mexico.

Lt. Michael Pooley says Marlen Hernandez was visiting relatives when the shooting occurred Monday night in the relatives’ apartment.

According to Pooley, the girl and her brother-in-law were handling his newly purchased handgun when he attempted to retrieve it from her and the gun accidentally discharged, shooting her in the head.



Police arrested 23-year-old Emmanuel Hilerio on suspicion of manslaughter.

It’s not immediately known whether Hilerio has an attorney who could comment on the allegation.

8:50 a.m.

Tempe police say a 23-year-old man has been arrested in the fatal shooting of his 16-year-old sister-in-law.

Lt. Michael Pooley says the girl was handling a handgun Monday night when Emmanuel Hilerio attempted to retrieve it from her and the gun accidentally discharged, shooting her in the head.

Pooley says Hilerio has been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter in connection with what Pooley called a “tragic incident.”

The dead girl’s identity wasn’t released, and it’s not immediately known whether Hilerio has an attorney who could comment on the allegation.

Tempe police say the fatal shooting of a 16-year-old girl was accidental.

Police say an adult male relative of the victim was handling a gun Monday night when it discharged, hitting the teen in the face.

Police said in a statement that the shooting was accidental.

Identities were not released.

The shooting occurred at an apartment complex near Rural Road and University Drive.
