TUPELO, Miss. (AP) - Two groups are set to host public demonstrations on the same day on opposite ends of Tupelo.

The Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reports (https://bit.ly/2a3MRQ5) Tupelo Police Chief Bart Aguirre approved a permit for Our Lives Matter 2 to host a march and demonstration Saturday morning at City Hall. Aguirre also approved a permit for the Confederates United Patriot Society to host a demonstration Saturday afternoon at Ballard Park.

The Our Lives Matter 2 protest comes following the fatal shooting of Antwun “Ronnie” Shumpert by a Tupelo police officer on June 18. The circumstances of Shumpert’s death are disputed.

The Confederates United Patriot Society, a pro Confederate flag group, originally wanted to host a opposition rally on the Lee Courthouse lawn. City officials and organizers agreed instead to move the event to the west side of town.
