GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) - The mayor of Grand Forks is traveling to a Norwegian sister city to celebrate its 1,000th birthday.

Mayor Michael Brown and his wife depart Wednesday for the festivities in Norway’s Sarpsborg, which has been a sister city of Grand Forks officially since 2005.

Mayors of Sarpsborg’s other sister cities, as well as Norwegian officials are expected to attend the celebration.

Brown says he’s “honored and humbled” to represent Grand Forks at the event. Since becoming sister cities, the two have mostly focused on education and cultural efforts at public schools and the University of North Dakota.

The mayor and his wife will take part in official activities starting Thursday and return home Sunday.
