MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Vermont U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy, the senior Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, is joining calls for an FBI investigation into alleged hacking into the Democratic National Committee’s computer systems.

Leahy joined Republican committee chairman Sen. Charles Grassley of Iowa and other senators in saying evidence points to hackers working for the Russian government as the likely perpetrators, which officials in Moscow have denied.

The letter says there have been past instances of hacking into political parties’ computer systems by foreign governments. But they say a release of some DNC emails to the online data exposure site WikiLeaks constitutes an apparent attempt to tamper with the U.S. electoral process.

It says that element of apparent political tampering makes the new cyberattacks substantially more troubling that those in the past.
