OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - The head of Oklahoma’s prison system has appointed a new warden at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary following a series of mishaps during the last few scheduled executions.

Department of Corrections Director Joe Allbaugh announced Wednesday the appointment of Terry Royal of Clermont, Florida, to oversee the prison in McAlester that houses the state’s death row and execution chamber.

Royal has more than 20 years of experience working at prison facilities in Florida, Arizona and Indiana. He most recently served as warden of the Lake Correctional Institution in Clermont.

Royal replaces Kevin Duckworth, who was named interim warden in May.

Former OSP Warden Anita Trammell announced her retirement last year amid a grand jury investigation into how the wrong drug was delivered to the prison for the last two scheduled executions.
