SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - A San Francisco Police Officer has been arrested on firearms charges for having an illegal AR-15 assault rifle.

The San Francisco Police Department said Officer Thomas Abrahamsen turned himself in Tuesday and was booked at San Francisco County jail.

Police say the 50-year-old Abrahamsen, of Berkeley, faces one felony count of manufacture of an assault weapon and one felony count of possession of an assault weapon.

The department says internal affairs began a probe in the summer of 2015 after receiving information from other members of the police department about Abrahamsen’s weapon.

The department says the 18-year veteran was put on unpaid administrative leave.
