PHILADELPHIA, Miss. (AP) - Some quotes from speeches given Wednesday by politicians at the Neshoba County Fair:

“I’ve got 10 minutes I’ve got to fill. We didn’t do 10 minutes’ worth of work in Jackson for the working people this year.”

- State Rep. Michael Evans, a Preston Democrat, discussing the 2016 Legislature.

“Regardless of what happens in this case, I will continue to stand and protect the values of this district.”

- State Sen. Jennifer Branning, a Philadelphia Republican, discussing the court challenge to House Bill 1523. Branning guided the measure meant to protect objections to same-sex marriage through the Senate, and it has now been blocked by a federal judge.

“We have got to have a plan that the public will accept and that the public can afford. Just throwing money at it doesn’t fix the problem. We have to have a plan. I support a reasonable plan that will allow us to fix our roads and bridges at a time we can do that.

- Rep. Scott Bounds, a Philadelphia Republican, on additional money to repair roads and bridges.

“Ladies and gentlemen, it is time. It is time to properly repair what we have and build what we need. Yes, it’s going to cost money, and it’s not going to fall from the sky.”

- Central District Transportation Commissioner Dick Hall, a Republican, on the need for road funding.

“We’ve cut way beyond past the bone. And that’s the problem with people passing this legislation who don’t understand what they’re doing.”

- Attorney General Jim Hood, a Democrat, on cuts to mental health programs.

“When people are working, that’s when the economy starts rolling - not when you give large tax cuts.”

- Hood, discussing tax cuts by lawmakers over the last five years.

“If this opinion by the federal court denied even one Mississippian of their fundamental right to practice their religion, then all Mississippians are denied their fundamental right to practice their religion.”

- Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves, a Republican, discussing the federal court decision blocking HB 1523.

“You and I may not be able to make Jim Hood defend our laws in court, but we can make him defend his liberal beliefs in the next election.”

- Reeves, on Hood’s refusal to defend HB 1523 before the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

“During the decades of Democratic government, they built a maze of bureaucracy and backdoor budgeting. They devised rat-holes and work-arounds to hide how much of your money they were wasting.”

- Reeves, defending a measure that rolled some separate government accounts into the main state budget.
