BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Child welfare officials have taken custody of a 1-year-old who was found alone inside a parked car in Birmingham.

Police say a mother left her child in the vehicle with the windows cracked while she went inside a Walmart to shop Thursday morning, and another person called authorities after seeing the child.

Officers forced the windows down enough to retrieve the child, who wasn’t harmed. The mother wasn’t charged, but police say the Department of Human Resources still took custody of the child.

Authorities aren’t releasing the name of the woman or the child. They say Human Resources will decide what to do with the youngster.
