COMPTON, Calif. (AP) - Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies have killed a suspected carjacker and shot at another in Compton.

A department statement says deputies stopped a car for a traffic violation around 2:30 a.m. Thursday and found it was reported carjacked from South Los Angeles.

The car took off and shots were fired at pursuing deputies before the car crashed into a curb.

Deputies say two men jumped out and one opened fire on them. They fired back but missed. A house-to-house search led to the man’s arrest.

Authorities say three hours later, the second man was found hiding in a yard.

The Sheriff’s Department says he charged at deputies, who thought he was armed and shot him.

The man, in his 20s, died at the scene. No weapon has been found.
