HOWELL, N.J. (AP) - Police say an 82-year-old New Jersey man was critically injured when he walked into the path of a garbage truck in Howell and his leg was severed.

The accident occurred as the garbage truck from Central Jersey Waste and Recycling was backing up at the Cherry Tree Plaza office park on state Route 9 around 11 a.m. Thursday.

Chief Andrew Kudrick Jr. says the victim, who wasn’t identified, suffered severe injuries in addition to having his leg amputated.

Kudrick says Cpl. Matthew Bishop saved the man’s life by applying a tourniquet to stop the bleeding. The victim was rushed to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, where he was listed in extremely serious condition.

Howell police’s Traffic Safety Unit is investigating.
