CHICAGO (AP) - A Cook County correctional officer has been charged with felony misconduct after video surveillance cameras captured him allegedly punching a jail inmate.

In a news release, the Cook County state’s attorney’s office says 44-year-old Miguel Ortiz appeared in court on Thursday, where a judge allowed him to be released from custody on his written promise to appear in court.

Ortiz was working the night of January 17, 2014 when an inmate being transferred from one wing of the jail to another started arguing with other officers. Prosecutors allege when the inmate fell to the ground as Ortiz tried to grab him, Ortiz then punched the man several times in the head.

The state’s attorney’s office did not immediately know if Ortiz has retained an attorney.
