MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - Memphis coach Tubby Smith says former walk-on Jake McDowell will receive a scholarship for the 2016-17 season.

Smith, who is entering his first season as Memphis’ coach, said Thursday in a university release that “he and his family have given so much to this program through hard work and dedication.” Smith added that “Jake has done everything we have asked, and I am looking forward to coaching him this coming season.”

McDowell, a guard/forward, played 24 games as a walk-on last season and made one start. He finished the season with 14 total points and nine rebounds.

McDowell’s father, Hank McDowell, lettered at Memphis from 1977-81 and later played in the NBA with Houston, Portland and Golden State. Hank McDowell now is a radio analyst with the NBA’s Memphis Grizzlies.
