TRENTON, N.J. (AP) - A New Jersey rabbi convicted of plotting the 1994 murder-for-hire of his wife is staying in prison.

A state appeals court turned down Fred Neulander’s request to overturn his conviction. Neulander’s lawyer had argued there were errors at his trial and that he was denied effective counsel.

Neulander is 74 years old and won’t be eligible for parole until he’s nearly 90.

The court disagreed.

Two hit men testified they beat Carol Neulander to death on orders from her husband. One testified Fred Neulander wanted his wife dead so he could carry on an affair.

Both have completed their prison sentences.
