ASHTABULA, Ohio (AP) - Authorities say a 48-year-old northeast Ohio man died after he was struck by a freight train while riding a bicycle in downtown Ashtabula (ash-tuh-BYOO’-luh).

Ashtabula County Coroner’s Investigator Richard Mongell tells The Star-Beacon that Brian Moniz was pronounced dead at the scene shortly before 10 p.m. Wednesday. The Ashtabula man was struck by an eastbound Norfolk Southern train.

Police Chief Robert Stell says Moniz’s body was found on the railroad tracks. Mongell says he couldn’t tell whether Moniz was riding his bike on the tracks or alongside them.

Authorities say the death is under investigation but didn’t appear to be a suicide. An autopsy was expected.
