WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) - A New York man who stabbed his girlfriend in the neck and tried to stab her son in the heart could spend decades behind bars.

Acting Westchester County District Attorney James A. McCarty says Bairon Farez Llanos of White Plains will be sentenced Aug. 24 for attempted murder and other crimes.

The son tried to protect his mother during the July 2015 attack. Authorities say the defendant got on top of him and tried to stab him in the heart. He was able to deflect the knife and suffered only a cut on the chest.

McCarty says Llanos faces up to 25 years in prison on the top count for each victim.
