LORMAN, Miss. (AP) - Alcorn State University has given a three-year contract extension to athletics director Derek Horne.

A news release Friday says that will keep him at Alcorn through 2019.

Horne was hired in August 2014.

That year, the football team won its first Southwestern Athletic Conference championship in 20 years. It won the conference title again the following year.

The women’s tennis team made it to the NCAA tournament both years.

And the number of athletes receiving SWAC honors for making the honor roll rose from 91 in 2014 to 123 last year.

Horne was a four-year letterman on the Mississippi basketball team from 1983 to 1986. He later worked for 15 years in his alma mater’s athletics administration department, and was athletic director at Florida A&M; before coming to Alcorn.
