NEWBERRY, S.C. (AP) - The South Carolina Department of Transportation says it will need to close a lane on the main route from the Upstate to Columbia for emergency repairs to a bridge in Newberry County.

Officials said in a news release that one eastbound lane of Interstate 26 near mile marker 81 east of Newberry will be closed starting at 8 p.m. Sunday.

Crews hope to finish the work by the following Friday. About 42,000 vehicles drive on that part of I-26 each day.

Workers will be making emergency repairs to the deck of the bridge that crosses the Palmetto Trail.

Several other bridges in the state have had to close in the past few years for similar repairs
