PAWTUCKET, R.I. (AP) - A nonprofit health care organization in Rhode Island has been awarded a federal grant to develop a new program providing behavioral health treatment to the state’s homeless.

WPRI-TV (https://bit.ly/2aBwxem ) reports that Pawtucket-based Gateway Healthcare said Thursday the program will offer treatment to homeless adults with chronic mental health issues that include serious mental illnesses and substance abuse.

The program will be funded by a $1.2 million grant over three years awarded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. The grant will fund support services like community support, crisis intervention and housing.

It will be developed and managed according to mental health care practices endorsed by the agency.
