NEW YORK (AP) - A man who paid someone else to kill a government witness in an $800,000 bank fraud scheme has been sentenced to life in prison.

U.S. Attorney Robert L. Capers in Brooklyn says Naquan Reyes was sentenced Thursday in the death of 24-year-old Nicole Thompson.

Her body - duct taped and wrapped in garbage bags - was found in July 2010 in a Landover, Maryland dumpster.

Reyes got jobs at various banks, created counterfeit checks and recruited other people to deposit them. They then tried to withdraw the funds before the banks got wind of the scheme.

Thompson was one of the recruits. Reyes ordered the hit when he learned she was cooperating with law enforcers.

Reyes later commented that he would “do it again” in an attempt to save himself.
