PHOENIX (AP) - A Phoenix couple is facing charges after a 6-year-old boy was severely burned on his feet and found to have multiple body bruises.

Phoenix police say they were called to the Maricopa Medical Center on July 12 to check on a child who had been brought in with severe burns.

They say 27-year-old Mark Simmons admitted to making his son stand barefoot on the ground in the backyard for about 10 minutes as punishment and using a belt on the boy that caused bruising.

He’s been indicted by a grand jury on two counts of child abuse.

The boy’s 30-year-old stepmother, Sarah Simmons, allegedly cut the boy’s blistered skin.

She was arrested Thursday on suspicion of child abuse.

Sarah Simmons didn’t have an attorney at her initial court appearance Friday.
