PORTLAND, Maine (AP) - Ride-sharing service Lyft has further expanded its reach by offering the service to residents in the Greater Portland area .

Beginning Friday, Lyft drivers will be available to take riders to their various destinations in Portland, South Portland, Westbrook, Cape Elizabeth, Scarborough, Gorham and Freeport.

Lyft uses computer software and smartphone apps to connect passengers with drivers who shuttle them to their destinations in their own vehicles. Founded in 2012, Lyft is the biggest rival of Uber and is offered in more than 200 cities.

A spokesperson for the Maine Secretary of State says regulators issued Lyft its businesses permit Thursday afternoon.
