NEW YORK (AP) - Police say a man who fell off his personal watercraft and got stranded in waters between New York City’s Staten Island and New Jersey was rescued after using his cell phone to call authorities.

The New York Police Department says it happened around 5 p.m. Thursday.

Police say the Coast Guard asked their help looking for the 21-year-old man in Raritan Bay. An NYPD helicopter crew spotted him, and then another police copter sent down divers and a basket.

He was taken to a hospital for observation.
