POWNAL, Vt. (AP) - Gov. Peter Shumlin is set to travel to Pownal, in Vermont’s southwest corner, to observe a clean-water milestone.

The state last week lifted the “do not drink” order for a municipal drinking water system in the town that earlier had been found to be contaminated with low levels of the chemical PFOA.

Pownal’s Fire District Number Two was found to be contaminated with slightly elevated levels of the chemical. A filter system was installed on the system earlier this month.

The governor’s office says that test results last week showed that a new treatment system is effectively removing all PFOA from the drinking water system. Shumlin heads to Pownal on Monday.

The contamination in Pownal is separate from that found in the nearby towns of Bennington and Shaftsbury.
