HYANNIS, Mass. (AP) - A 2-year-old girl has been taken to the hospital after stepping on hot coals on a Cape Cod beach.

Barnstable police Sgt. Mark Butler said the child walked over coals that had been dumped onto the sand Sunday afternoon at Veteran’s Park Beach in Hyannis.

Butler says the child was taken via helicopter to a Rhode Island hospital with what appear to be serious injuries.

The beach, which is located next to the John F. Kennedy Memorial, has a grilling and picnic area.

No further details were immediately available.

This story has been corrected to show that, per police, a 2-year-old girl was injured, not a boy.
