SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) - The coroner’s office has identified the man shot and killed by Spartanburg County deputies.

Coroner Rusty Clevenger said fingerprints helped his investigators identify 63-year-old Alexis Mishtowt.

Sheriff Chuck Wright said Mishtowt was heavily armed and pointed a gun at officers Friday evening at his home near Landrum.

Wright says undercover officers called for uniform deputies after something went wrong during an investigation. He did not elaborate.

Clevenger says the coroner’s office has not been able to find any of Mishtowt’s family members.

The name of the deputy who shot Mishtowt has not been released. Both the officer and Mishtowt are white.
