POST FALLS, Idaho (AP) - Authorities in northern Idaho say a Washington state man has died after he spent more than five minutes submerged in the Spokane River.

The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office announced Sunday that 25-year-old Michael Williams of Spokane Valley died at an Idaho hospital.

The Coeur d’Alene Press (https://bit.ly/29cPYFr ) reports Williams was swimming in Q’Emiln (Ka-mee-lin) Park in Post Falls, Idaho on Saturday when he slipped under the water.

Williams was submerged for about five minutes before others at the park were able to flag down the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office Marine unit for help. A deputy dove into the water and located Williams within a few minutes, and responders began resuscitation efforts as he was taken to the shore.

Emergency workers reported that they were able to restore Williams’ pulse several minutes later. He was taken to a Coeur d’Alene hospital but died Sunday as a result of the drowning.
