MADISON, Wis. (AP) - The Dane County Sheriff’s Office says deputies have thwarted a jail inmate’s attempted suicide.

Authorities say it happened late Saturday morning on the seventh floor of the City-County Building Jail. Deputies were conducting meal service down the hallway when inmates called out that another inmate in their cellblock was trying to hang himself with a bedsheet.

Deputies entered the cellblock and removed the sheet from the inmate’s neck. He did not lose consciousness and was quickly evaluated by jail medical staff.

The 20-year-old Madison man was evaluated at a hospital and returned to the Dane County Jail, where he will be monitored. The inmate has been in the jail since May.
