PUTNAM LAKE, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say a false report of armed intruders led to a two-hour lockdown of a neighborhood in Putnam County.

The incident started at around 11:20 p.m. Friday in Putnam Lake.

Putnam County Sheriff Donald B. Smith says 28-year-old John Sheehan told deputies that he had gone to a friend’s house to walk the friend’s dog and had seen several heavily armed people wearing masks inside the house.

Deputies and state troopers cordoned off an area surrounding the house and locked it down for two hours.

The sheriff says there were no intruders. Sheehan was arrested on a charge of falsely reporting an incident. He was later taken to a hospital for psychological evaluation.

It’s not clear if Sheehan has a lawyer who could comment on his behalf.
