JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) - The U.S. Coast Guard says several private boaters rescued 18 people from a whale-watching vessel that had started to take on water in a channel near Juneau.

The Coast Guard says the rescue of the 16 passengers and two crew members aboard the Big Red took place Sunday afternoon in Favorite Channel.

The passengers and crew were taken onto a boat called the St. Herman, with the help of recreational vessel See You. They were then taken to Allen Marine Dock to the Coast Guard and emergency medical personnel. One person was treated for a knee injury.

The boats came to the Big Red’s rescue after the crew reported the boat was taking on water.

The Coast Guard says the weather conditions at the time were 17 mph winds, 4-foot seas and light rain.
