ANOKA, Minn. (AP) - Two women are charged in a videotaped beating of a 15-year-old Minnesota girl whose hair was cut by one of her attackers.

Cassandra Borden, 18, of Cedar, and Alexis Nelson, 19, of Zimmerman, were charged Friday in Anoka County with fifth-degree assault, a misdemeanor, the Star Tribune reported. Borden also was charged with misdemeanor fourth-degree property damage for the breaking of the victim’s $500 cellphone during the beating.

The assault happened June 17 in a wooded area of St. Francis, a northern Minneapolis suburb. A video of the late-night attack was posted online by the victim’s mother and had been viewed more than 500,000 times as of Sunday morning.

The charges allege Borden struck the girl nearly 50 times after saying that Borden caught the victim with “my man.” The attackers, with bystanders looking on, also accused the girl of “snitching” on Borden’s boyfriend, who was cited for drunken driving.

Nelson is not accused of hitting the girl, but the complaint alleges she snipped off several inches of the victim’s hair while the girl was being beaten and punched.

Nelson’s mother, Kim Nelson, said Sunday that “a girl behind (Alexis) was egging her on, ‘cut her hair, cut her hair.’ There was drinking involved, and she just got egged on.” She said her daughter is “very remorseful for what she did” and called the victim the next day to apologize.

Messages left for Borden’s family Sunday by the newspaper seeking comment were not immediately returned.

Court documents say the victim suffered bruises, red marks and scratches on her body and face, and “a large section of her hair had been cut off.”

Both women were charged by summons and remain free. They are due in court for hearings Aug. 25.
