WASHINGTON (AP) - District of Columbia police say a 6-year-old boy was shot near a playground in southeast Washington.

The shooting occurred Saturday afternoon, and police said they were searching for men wearing black masks. The child was one of eight people shot in around the city during a spate of violence on Saturday, much of it in the early-morning hours.

Police Capt. Kelvin Cusick told reporters at the scene that it appears the child was not the intended target of the shooting, which occurred shortly before 5 p.m. The boy was wounded in the leg and is expected to recover.

Neighborhood activist Trayon White, who won a Democratic primary for the D.C. Council representing the ward where the shooting occurred, says the playground is dilapidated and unsafe.
