NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) - A 17-year-old girl has been charged with felony murder after police say she hit and killed a man with a car as he was mowing his lawn in Newport News.

Police say the Newport News girl was charged Saturday afternoon and is in custody. Because she is a juvenile, her name was not released.

Police say the girl jumped into the driver’s seat of a vehicle that was pulled over on Friday afternoon as officers tried to serve a drug-related warrant. Police say she struck 42-year-old Arnold Coates a few minutes later.

Police say the girl continued to drive until she crashed into an SUV, at which point she ran to a nearby home and called a relative. She surrendered to police shortly after. The girl was wanted for robbery.
