MONROE, La. (AP) - A 24-year-old man has been charged in a shooting at the Monroe Civic Center that left two dead and three wounded.

Jaterrious “Dra” Godfrey of Monroe was arrested Monday and charged with second-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, The News-Star reported (https://tnsne.ws/29oWfks ).

Monroe Police Chief Quentin Holmes said Godfrey was booked into Ouachita Correctional Center with a $650,000 bond. It was not immediately clear whether Godfrey is represented by an attorney who could comment on his behalf.

Holmes said officers were dispatched to the Civic Center parking lot shortly after 1:30 a.m. Sunday about a fight that broke out as patrons were leaving a private event attended by as many as 2,000 people.

An initial investigation suggested that two groups with a previously existing conflict stated fighting in the parking lot after the event. As officers were responding, gunshots were fired, and five people were hit.

Witnesses identified Godfrey as one of the shooters, Holmes said.

Two victims died and three were hospitalized with injuries that were not life threatening. The names of the dead were being withheld pending notification of relatives.

The party was a bring-your-own-bottle event, according to reports, but Holmes said further investigation, including autopsy reports, would be required to determine if the victims had consumed alcohol before the shooting.
