TREMPEALEAU, Wis. (AP) - Police in western Wisconsin say they caught a teenager as he was trying to set a church on fire.

The Trempealeau County Sheriff’s Department issued a news release Monday saying the agency got a call early Sunday morning of suspicious activity at St. Bartholomew’s Catholic Church in the village of Trempealeau. A deputy and a Galesville police officer arrived and saw a 19-year-old Trempealeau man setting fire to the church.

The man fled but the officers caught up to him after a short foot chase and arrested him following a struggle. Firefighters immediately extinguished the fire.

The man could face charges of arson and criminal damage to religious property.
