LINCOLN, R.I. (AP) - A Rhode Island woman has donated a rare 48-star American flag to an Iwo Jima memorial in Massachusetts to replace its 48-star flag that was stolen two years ago.

Maggie Rogers tells WPRI-TV (https://bit.ly/29tEj9T ) that the flag had been sitting in her attic.

The Lincoln resident says she decided to donate it after learning that the memorial still needed a replacement.

The Fall River memorial was in the news last week after vandals smashed a display case and made off with a Purple Heart medal and a vial of sand from the small Pacific island.

Rogers says she’s donating the flag to honor her father, who served in World War II.
