JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) - A man accused of killing his former girlfriend and their 4-year-old son has pleaded not guilty to two counts of murder.

Jose Santos-Alvarez entered his pleas during an arraignment hearing held Tuesday.

Hudson County prosecutors have said that Santos strangled 27-year-old Monika Potoczniak and smothered 4-year-old Christopher Potoczniak last October. The two were found unconscious inside their Jersey City apartment, and their deaths were ruled a homicide.

A motive for the attack has not been disclosed.

Santos-Alvarez was shot several days later by Hackensack police after he allegedly lunged at officers with a knife.
