SAN DIEGO (AP) - A San Diego police officer has been arrested for allegedly hitting his girlfriend in the Gaslamp District, a downtown area of restaurants and bars.

Lt. Scott Wahl says Sgt. Oscar Armenta was booked Tuesday at the San Diego County jail and has been put on administrative leave while he is being investigated for domestic violence. He did not provide further details of the incident.

According to the San Diego Union-Tribune, Armenta is accused of punching his girlfriend on the street and was arrested about 8:30 p.m. Monday. The newspaper says the woman suffered a laceration to her head. Armenta was off-duty at the time.

Wahl says Armenta has been on the force 13 years.

Wahl says Armenta is facing both criminal and administrative consequences as a result of the incident.
