WILMINGTON, N.Y. (AP) - An 80-year-old elevator inside a mountain is getting a multi-million-dollar makeover.

Olympic Regional Development Authority CEO Ted Blazer says Gov. Andrew Cuomo has agreed for the state to provide $3 million to renovate the Whiteface Mountain elevator.

The Adirondack Daily Enterprise (https://bit.ly/29lfydR ) reports that Blazer talked about the plan at the authority’s board meeting last week.

The elevator rises 27 stories to the granite castle on the summit from a parking lot at the upper end of the Whiteface Veterans Memorial Highway. The state Department of Transportation allocated $11 million to rehabilitate the scenic road in 2013.

At 4,867-feet-high, Whiteface is New York’s fifth highest peak.
