CAMDEN, S.C. (AP) - A civilian doing a ride-along with a Kershaw County Sheriff’s deputy helped detain a man.

Sheriff James Matthews says the civilian helped arrest 27-year-old Richard Herman Roach III during Saturday morning’s ride-along.

Matthews says the deputy noticed a vehicle speeding near Camden and attempted to pull the driver over. Roach, who was driving the car, sped off before losing control and crashing the vehicle.

As the deputy approached the car, he saw Roach reach for something under his seat. The deputy pulled Roach from the car, but Roach struck him and a scuffle ensued. The civilian then came to the deputy’s aid and helped place Roach in handcuffs.

Roach escaped while being transported to jail, but was later recaptured. He was booked on charges including resisting arrest with assault. It’s unclear if he has an attorney.
