PIERRE, S.D. (AP) - The South Dakota Highway Patrol says time remains to apply to be a state trooper.

The Department of Public Safety says the application deadline is Friday. The Highway Patrol plans to hire between 15 and 20 new recruits.

Col. Craig Price is the superintendent of the Highway Patrol. Price says the patrol wants to get the best available applicants.

Law enforcement officers who are certified can get a $3,000 hiring bonus.

New recruits who aren’t certified as a law enforcement officer in South Dakota or a different state would have to attend a training academy in Pierre, in addition to other training.

From initial application to graduation, it takes about a year to become a state trooper.
