GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) - Furman is naming Brett Harker its new baseball coach after he guided the Paladins’ pitchers the past two seasons.

Athletic director Mike Buddie announced the hire Wednesday. Harker takes over for Ron Smith, who resigned last month after 23 seasons leading the program.

Buddie said the deeper he went into the search process, the more he realized that Harker was the perfect fit for the Paladins.

Harker has also coached pitchers at NCAA Division II programs in Newberry and North Greenville. He played college baseball at College of Charleston, where he appeared in 78 games with a career record of 14-6.

Harker was picked by the Philadelphia Phillies in the fifth round of the MLB draft and spent five seasons as pro before moving into coaching.
