MISSOULA, Mont. (AP) - A 25-year-old registered sex offender and convicted child rapist is charged with deliberate homicide in the suffocation death of a 5-month-old Missoula boy.

Marc Allen Palmer was arrested Wednesday and made an initial appearance in Justice Court in the death of Brayden Beal. He did not enter a plea. Justice of the Peace Karen Orzech maintained the $500,000 bail set in the arrest warrant.

Court records say emergency responders were called to the home of Palmer’s mother early on March 30 to a report of a child not breathing. An investigation determined the baby had been smothered. Court records say Brayden and his mother, Ginny Peck, were staying with Palmer at his mother’s house.

Montana’s sexual offender registry says Palmer was sentenced in 2007 for child rape and three counts of child molestation in Washington state.
