LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - A Lincoln man arrested on suspicion of raping and robbing a 77-year-old woman has been charged with a hate crime.

The Lincoln Journal Star says (https://bit.ly/29sJhk8 ) Seward County prosecutors charged 29-year-old Chad Drewes with 10 felony counts, including a hate crime, saying he targeted his victim because of her age.

Seward County sheriff’s investigators say a shirtless man kicked in the victim’s door on June 24 and beat, strangled and raped her. The man then ransacked her house, stealing jewelry, medication and electronics before leaving in the woman’s SUV.

Using GPS technology, police found the vehicle in Lincoln and arrested Drewes. Police say Drewes had several of the victim’s possessions.

Drewes remains jailed on $750,000 bail. His public defender did not immediately return a phone message Wednesday seeking comment.
