RAY BROOK, N.Y. (AP) - State environmental officials are reminding northern New York residents to take steps to deter nuisance bears this summer.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation says nuisance bears have been reported in the towns of Corinth, Chestertown, Fort Ann and elsewhere.

The simplest way for homeowners to avoid close encounters with bears is to make sure food and garbage isn’t left out. DEC officials recommend storing garbage cans and grills in a secure location, removing bird feeders and suet and feeding pets indoors.

The agency asks that nuisance bears be reported to DEC dispatch at 518-897-1326.
