THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. (AP) - Ventura County sheriff’s officials say a veteran deputy has been suspended after he was suspected of taking prescription medication from the drop-off disposal bin at the department’s Thousand Oaks headquarters.

The Ventura County Star newspaper reported Tuesday (https://bit.ly/29nBS7N ) that officials began investigating Senior Deputy Matthew Volpe in early May. A sheriff’s employee reported a disparity in the amount of medication in the bin from the day before. Investigators looked at surveillance footage and saw someone in uniform removing items. The newspaper says the person was identified as Volpe, a 22-year veteran.

Evidence has been turned over to prosecutors for possible charges. The 45-year-old has not been arrested.

Volpe has been on paid administrative leave since May. He could face termination when the department probe is concluded.
