AIKEN, S.C. (AP) - A South Carolina couple has been charged in the death of her son.

Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton said in a statement Wednesday that he has determined the death of 4-year-old Mason B. Bryan last month was a homicide.

Multiple media outlets reported that 30-year-old Derek Matthew Roberson of Aiken and 29-year-old Amanda Leigh Bryan of Warrenville are charged in the death.

Roberson is charged with homicide by child abuse. Bryan is charged with illegal neglect of a child.

Sheriff’s deputies say Roberson was acting as the boy’s caregiver when he was injured.

Mason Bryan died from severe head trauma June 24 at Children’s Hospital of Georgia in Augusta.

The couple is being held in the Aiken County jail. It was not known if they have attorneys.
