EAST MEADOW, N.Y. (AP) - Authorities say an inmate at a Long Island jail has died while hospitalized.

Newsday reports (https://nwsdy.li/29ihGj0 ) the Nassau County jail inmate died Tuesday night and had been hospitalized since June 28 for medical reasons. County officials declined to comment on the inmate’s suspected cause of death or medical condition.

Authorities didn’t immediately identify the man. They say he’s been in custody since August 2015.

The fatality is the fifth at the jail this year.

The death comes as the jail and its private medical provider, Armor Correctional Health Services, have come under scrutiny. The state Commission of Correction found last year that Armor has a pattern of neglectful care and provided inadequate care in the deaths of four inmates since 2011.

The facility and Armor have defended their operations.
