FRESNO, Calif. (AP) - Two Fresno men have been arrested after authorities determined one faked his own kidnapping to try to extort money from his father.

The Fresno County Sheriff’s Office says Tuesday 35-year-old Hollis Priest and 30-year-old Dustin Petersen were arrested as they tried to collect the ransom money from a pickup truck parked at fast food restaurant’s parking lot.

Sheriff’s Office spokesman Tony Botti says both Priest and Petersen have extensive criminal histories and are methamphetamine users.

He says Priest’s father called deputies after receiving a text message from his son’s cellphone demanding thousands of dollars in exchange for his release.

Botti says Priest and Padersen showed up to pick up the ransom money and were arrested after investigators determined Priest faked his kidnapping to get money from his father to buy drugs.
